Teaching Philosophy
My educational philosophy emphasizes revision as a vital process for growth—encouraging students to continuously explore new ways to understand, express, and engage. I believe that reading, writing, and digital literacy are powerful tools for developing critical thinking, reflection, and connection, enabling students to challenge assumptions, embrace new perspectives, learn from their experiences, and build relationships grounded in respect and understanding.

In my classroom, I create a warm, inclusive environment where open-mindedness is actively encouraged. Students learn not only from me but also from one another, with each voice respected and valued. Through class discussions and individual conferences, I provide attentive listening and constructive feedback, ensuring every student’s perspective is heard. I incorporate cosmopolitan literacy practices, prioritizing ethically informed, socially aware communication. This approach encourages students to engage with diverse viewpoints and thoughtfully consider broader contexts—such as social, cultural, and kairotic factors—before drawing conclusions. I teach communication strategies like "agree/and," "disagree/explain why," and "both agree and disagree," helping students engage thoughtfully and respectfully in dialogue. By promoting a thorough examination of texts—through annotations and varying reading lenses inspired by Elbow’s 'Believing and Doubting Game'—I foster critical engagement both inside and outside the classroom. This approach not only enhances students’ intellectual growth but also helps them build meaningful relationships, collaborate with peers, and develop a strong sense of social responsibility for their communities.
Revision is central to my teaching philosophy. It teaches students to question, explore, and empathize, nurturing a growth mindset in both their academic work and personal development. As an instructor, I continually revise my lessons and teaching strategies to reflect the diverse needs and perspectives of my students, ensuring they feel valued and supported. I am deeply committed to fostering an environment where language and literacy serve as tools for creating a more engaged citizenry and a stronger democracy. By emphasizing revision as an ongoing process rather than a final product, I encourage students to embrace learning as a continuous journey of growth and transformation.
